PERSONALLY SPEAKING

I have been thinking for a long time that our industry just doesn't teach fitness right...to most people.  We have tended to treat new members as though they're all athletes...or at least wanna-be athletes.

Recently, I read a great article in Teaching ToleranceTM magazine about grade schools teaching kids new ways to learn - and enjoy - Physical Education.

That article was so powerful that I adapted it to our industry...and I offer you the following WHAT-IF'S.  I call the following "The Values of Inclusive Fitness" - and I ask you: HOW WOULD YOU DO IT?

Communicate clearly

* Encouragement as the fundamental value for members

* Modeling support for less-capable members

Personalize the curriculum

* Members develop own skills, not compete against others…or feel that they have to

* Competition reserved for higher-performing members

Accommodate special needs

* This is about health, fitness, having fun

* Not necessarily “rules” oriented…make the guidelines for the individuals

Emphasize effort and personal progress

* Progress more important than performance

* Effort being exerted, not necessarily results

Incorporate cooperative games

* i.e. Walk Across (your state) where every member participates

Eliminate physical activity as drudgery
Identify and remove instructor/trainer biases
